In LeBron James' season debut, Lakers storm past Jazz

November 19 - Luka Doncic scored 37 points with 10 assists and LeBron James added 11 points in 30 minutes of his season debut as the Los Angeles Lakers rallied for a 140-125 victory over the visiting Utah Jazz on Tuesday.

After missing the first 14 games of the season because of sciatica on his right side, James took the court to become the first player in NBA history to play in 23 consecutive seasons.
Austin Reaves scored 26 points, Deandre Ayton added 20 points with 14 rebounds and Jake LaRavia had 16 points as Los Angeles won its third consecutive game.
Keyonte George scored 33 points and Lauri Markkanen added 31 for the Jazz, who lost for the fifth time in their past seven games. Svi Mykhailiuk and Ace Bailey each scored 13 points and Jusuf Nurkic added 10 points with 10 rebounds in Utah's only road contest in a stretch of seven games.
The Lakers didn't take their first lead until going up 89-88 on a Doncic layup with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter. The basket was part of an 8-0 run that gave Los Angeles a 91-88 advantage.
The Lakers dominated from there. They led 104-93 through three quarters after trailing by as many as seven points earlier in the period. Doncic scored 17 points in the third quarter alone when Los Angeles had a 37-22 scoring advantage.
It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as the Lakers had a 36-32 advantage and finished with a season high in points.
The Jazz led the entire first half, taking an 11-2 lead 3:19 into the game and going up 16-6 five minutes into the opening quarter. James had a turnover in the opening minute and missed his only shot of the first quarter as Utah took a 36-27 lead.
James' first basket of the season came on a 3-pointer with 8:20 remaining in the first half. He scored seven points in the second quarter, while going 2 of 2 from 3-point range in the period.
The Jazz led 71-67 at halftime by shooting 55.3% from the floor as George had 23 points and Markkanen added 22.

Scotland beat Denmark 4-2 in thriller to reach World Cup

GLASGOW, Scotland, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Scotland reached the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998 in hair-raising fashion as stoppage-time goals by Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean secured a memorable 4-2 victory over Denmark at a rocking Hampden Park on Tuesday.

When Patrick Dorgu equalised for the second time in the 81st minute, it seemed 10-man Denmark would secure the point they needed to top Group C and book their place in the finals while sending Scotland into the playoffs.
But after a rollercoaster qualifying campaign for the Scots, including a 3-2 defeat in Greece on Saturday, the biggest twist was saved to the very end as they sparked the loudest party the city of Glasgow has seen for years.
When the ball came out to substitute Tierney in the third minute of stoppage time, he looked up and curled a superb left-footed shot past a diving Kasper Schmeichel.
The drama was not over though as with Denmark desperately trying to salvage the situation and Schmeichel way out of his goal, McLean launched a shot from the halfway line into the empty net to ensure Scotland's fabled Tartan Army can start booking flights for next year's North American showpiece.

"That just sums up this squad. Never say die. We just keep going right to the end and one of the craziest games," Scotland captain Andy Robertson said. "We put the country through it, but I'm sure it's worth it. We're going to the World Cup."
Denmark, who only needed to avoid defeat to make sure of their third successive World Cup finals appearance, were left crestfallen.
From a position of control in the group they managed only one point from their last two games, including the home draw with Belarus on Saturday, which opened the door for Scotland to seal an automatic place with victory on Tuesday.
The Danes were the better side for most of the night too but must now face last-chance saloon in the playoffs.

'PRETTY RUBBISH'

"I thought we were pretty rubbish to be honest, but who cares?" Scotland talisman John McGinn said.
Expectancy hung heavy in the night air long before kickoff as Scotland's date with destiny loomed. Despite qualifying for the last two European Championships, the World Cup has proved beyond them since France 1998.
They got a dream start in the third minute when Scott McTominay scored a magical goal for the ages.
Had it not been for what unfolded later, the moment the Napoli midfielder appeared to defy gravity to connect with a Ben Gannon-Doak cross and snap an overhead kick past Schmeichel would have become part of Scottish football folklore.
By the end it was just a blur after an intoxicating night of sporting chaos.
Scotland were full of nerves despite their start and Denmark dominated large chunks of the game with Hojlund having one goal ruled out for a push and wasting several other chances.
It was no surprise when Denmark did level in the 57th minute after Robertson's foul on Gustav

Isaksen was adjudged, after a lengthy VAR check, to have been just inside the penalty area and Hojlund made no mistake with an emphatic spot kick.
Minutes later though Scotland got another break as Rasmus Kristensen was harshly shown a second yellow card for a nudge on McGinn.
Even then, Denmark swarmed around Scotland's penalty area looking the more likely winners but it was the hosts who got back in front in the 81st minute when a corner was whipped in and substitute Lawrence Shankland got the decisive touch.
The real drama was only just starting though.
"I woke up this morning, and as a manager you normally wake up with that tight feeling in your stomach," Scotland manager Steve Clarke, who suffered heartbreak against Ukraine in the playoffs for the 2022 World Cup, said.
"I didn't have it this morning and I thought 'wow, that's strange'. I thought there was something wrong with me! But it's because I trust my players so much."

Federal workers remain vulnerable;US shutdown fallout

WASHINGTON, Nov 11 (Reuters) - As the U.S. Congress moved toward a deal to end the longest U.S. government shutdown in history, Reuters asked a dozen strategists and analysts to assess who strengthened their position and who paid a price, in the short- and long-term.

DONALD TRUMP: OWNING THE SHUTDOWN
No matter how many times the president has tried to avoid blame for the shutdown, ultimately, the buck stops with him. The White House has faced weeks of headlines about air traffic snarls and low-income families struggling to feed their kids. Even Trump himself admitted that the shutdown probably damaged Republicans in last week’s elections that saw Democrats win in New Jersey, Virginia and New York City.
“Americans recognize that 10 months into his presidency, costs have not gone down. And over the course of this 40-day shutdown, Trump did not emerge as someone who was fighting for them," said Democratic strategist Karen Finney. "He wasn't trying to resolve the issue. He wasn’t engaged, he was nowhere to be found.”
But the public has a short memory. After the government reopens, Trump can train his focus on Americans' cost-of-living concerns before the 2026 congressional midterms. He has shown he can keep his party together under extreme pressure while making few concessions.
“I think he comes out the winner of all this. He had to expend very little political capital in the shutdown," said John Elizandro, a Republican strategist.
"The negotiated deal gives him a resolution without forcing him to further escalate the clash with Senate Republicans over the filibuster,” he added, referring to the Senate requirement of 60 votes to pass legislation.
Consensus: Short-term loss, long-term neutral
SENATE REPUBLICANS: STAYING TOGETHER
Under the leadership of John Thune, Senate Republicans stayed united, held their ground and managed to peel off eight Democrats to vote to reopen the government. Their only concession was agreeing to a December vote on extending healthcare subsidies -- a vote widely expected to fail.
But unity doesn't guarantee immunity.
Recent Reuters/Ipsos polling showed that voters were more likely to blame Republicans than Democrats for the shutdown, a potential warning sign for next year's midterm elections. Some Republicans blamed the shutdown for the trio of losses the party suffered in elections last week.
Consensus: Short-term victory, long-term vulnerability
DEMOCRATS: A SPLIT DECISION
They held their ground – until they didn’t. Many in the Democratic Party are furious that eight senators defected after the party's electoral victories last week. Those senators argued their party's shutdown strategy wasn't working and lasting damage was being done to the economy.
But critics said they left those desperate for relief from healthcare premium increases in the lurch.
“Democrats who supported this compromise are feckless," said Michael Ceraso, a Democratic operative who worked on progressive Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign. "I believed my party would deliver after (last week's) elections."
If Republicans torpedo the Democratic push to extend healthcare subsidies, it will give Democratic candidates a ready-made issue in the midterms – akin to 2018, when Democrats took back control of the House amid Republican threats to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.
"Democrats have successfully elevated healthcare as a major national issue. This is dangerous for Republicans as healthcare drove the 2018 suburban blue wave," said Carlos Curbelo, a former Republican congressman from Florida.
Consensus: Short-term backlash, long-term leverage
CHUCK SCHUMER: FIRE FROM THE LEFT
The Senate’s top Democrat saw his colleagues do an end-run around him to cut a deal with Republicans.
He voted against the measure, but critics on the left blame him for allowing it to happen, with some progressive advocacy groups and at least one Democratic congressman, Ro Khanna of California, calling for his ouster.
Consensus: Loss
FEDERAL WORKERS: RELIEF, FOR THE MOMENT
Government employees have been big losers in the shutdown, going without pay. Some have taken temporary jobs to help pay bills.
To their relief, the end of the shutdown will restart regular paychecks and give them back pay.
Under the proposed Senate deal backed by Republicans and the small group of Democratic senators, they also get a temporary reprieve from the Trump administration’s layoff push until the end of January.
But these workers must fear another shutdown next year. Both parties have shown their willingness to use federal employees as bargaining chips.
Consensus: Short-term loss, long-term risk
AIRLINE PASSENGERS: STILL BUMPY AHEAD?
The end of the shutdown should allow officials to reverse forced flight reductions at the busiest airports that have caused havoc for hundreds of thousands of travelers.
The government ordered the cuts due to absenteeism among the 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 airport security screeners who have been required to work without pay during the shutdown. Many didn't come to work because they took second jobs or couldn't afford childcare.
On Sunday, the 40th day of the shutdown, 10,200 flights were delayed in the worst day for air travel yet.
If the disruption lingers, it would prolong misery for travelers going into Thanksgiving week, one of the busiest air travel times of the year.
Moreover, even before the shutdown, the U.S. was about 3,500 air traffic controllers short of targeted staffing. Many worked mandatory overtime and six-day weeks, and air travel snarls were common, suggesting disruption may continue.
Consensus: Short-term turbulence, long-term uncertainty
OBAMACARE PARTICIPANTS: PAYING A PRICE?
For Democrats, the shutdown was about protecting consumers from rising health insurance costs as subsidies for Obamacare plans expire at the end of the year.
But the deal to reopen the government didn’t secure those protections — leaving millions who rely on the exchanges exposed to premium hikes.
Democrats hope to pass legislation next month to preserve the subsidies, but the odds are slim. If the effort fails, the families whom they sought to help will feel the full weight of rising premiums with no clear prospects for relief.
Consensus: Short-term loss, long-term threat
