Heathrow Airport closed due to power outage, 1,300 flights cancelled

Heathrow Airport in the UK has been closed after a fire broke out at a nearby electrical substation. Authorities have announced that one of the world's busiest airports will remain closed for the entire day on Friday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The substation where the fire broke out supplies power to Heathrow Airport. The fire knocked out power to the airport on Thursday night. The cause of the fire is not yet known. News-BBC

There is no official figure on how many flights may be cancelled at Heathrow Airport today. However, Flight Radar24 said that the number could be at least 1,351. It is the UK's largest airport, with around 1,300 flights arriving and departing every day. A record 83.9 million passengers travelled through the terminal last year.

Meanwhile, the closure of Heathrow Airport is disrupting flight schedules around the world. The airport authorities have expressed their regret for the inconvenience and advised passengers not to go to the airport. They have been asked to contact their airlines for more information.

The London Fire Brigade said around 70 firefighters were working to put out the fire at the substation. Flames and plumes of black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky above the substation.

According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, several flights have already been diverted to other airports. In a post on social media, Heathrow Airport said the airport would remain closed until 11:59pm on March 21 to ensure the safety of passengers and colleagues. Passengers are advised not to come to the airport.

An airport spokesman said firefighters were working at the scene. "We are not sure when power will be restored. We are doing our best to get the situation back to normal," the airport said.

Heathrow's traffic authority said there were currently 120 flights bound for Heathrow that had to either land at another airport or return to their original destination.
