Nvidia hits $5 trillion valuation as AI boom powers meteoric rise

, opens new tamade history on Wednesday as the first company to reach $5 trillion in market value, powered by a rally that has cemented its place at the center of the global artificial intelligence boom.

The Wall Street milestone underscores the company's swift transformation from a niche graphics-chip designer into the backbone of the global AI industry, turning CEO Jensen Huang into a Silicon Valley icon and making its advanced chips a flashpoint in the tech rivalry between the U.S. and China.

Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, Nvidia's shares have climbed 12-fold as the AI frenzy propelled the S&P 500 to record highs, igniting a debate on whether frothy tech valuations could lead to the next big bubble.

The new milestone, coming just three months after Nvidia breached the $4 trillion mark, would surpass the total cryptocurrency market value.

"Nvidia hitting a $5 trillion market cap is more than a milestone; it's a statement, as Nvidia has gone from chip maker to industry creator," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, which holds shares in the company.

"The market continues to underestimate the scale of the opportunity, and Nvidia remains one of the best ways to play the AI theme."

After a string of recent announcements solidified its dominance in the AI race, shares of the Santa Clara, California-based company ended Wednesday's session up 3% at $207.04, giving it a stock market value of $5.03 trillion.

Huang announced $500 billion in AI chip orders on Tuesday and said he plans to build seven supercomputers for the U.S. government.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is expected to discuss Nvidia's Blackwell chip with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Sales of the high-end chip have been a key sticking point between the two sides due to Washington's export controls.

STOCK SURGE BOOSTS HUANG'S WEALTH

At current prices, CEO Huang's stake in Nvidia would be worth about $179.2 billion, according to regulatory filings and Reuters calculations. He is the world's eighth-richest person, per Forbes' billionaire list.

Born in Taiwan and raised in the United States from age nine, Huang has led Nvidia since founding it in 1993. Under his leadership, the company's H100 and Blackwell processors have become the engines behind large-language models powering tools such as ChatGPT and Elon Musk's xAI.

While Nvidia remains the clear front-runner in the AI race, Big Tech peers Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab and Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab have also reached $4 trillion in market value in recent months.

Analysts say the rally reflects investor confidence in unrelenting AI spending, though some warn valuations may be running hot.

"AI's current expansion relies on a few dominant players financing each other's capacity. The moment investors start demanding cash-flow returns instead of capacity announcements, some of these flywheels could seize," said Matthew Tuttle, CEO of Tuttle Capital Management.

Tech companies' heavy weighting in the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab and Nasdaq 100 (.NDX), opens new tab gives them broad influence over global markets.

Nvidia is due to report quarterly results on November 19.

GEOPOLITICAL BARGAINING CHIP

The company's dominance has drawn global regulatory scrutiny, with U.S. export curbs on advanced chips making it a key pawn in Washington's strategy to limit China's access to AI technology.

"Nvidia clearly brought their story to D.C. to both educate and gain favor with the U.S. government," said Bob O'Donnell of TECHnalysis Research. "They managed to hit most of the hottest and most influential topics in tech."

The developer conference on Tuesday also served as a platform for Huang to walk a geopolitical tightrope.

He praised Trump's "America First" policies for accelerating domestic tech investment, while warning that excluding China from Nvidia's ecosystem could limit U.S. access to half of the world's AI developers.

Rivals including Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), opens new tab and several well-funded startups are seeking to challenge Nvidia's dominance in high-end AI chips, but it remains the industry's top choice.

Pentagon chief seeks to boost US ties with flurry of talks in Asia

 KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth held talks on Friday with counterparts from China and India, among a series of face-to-face meetings at an ASEAN defence summit in Malaysia as Washington seeks to boost its influence and regional security ties.

Hegseth said on X he told China's Dong Jun the United States would "stoutly defend its interests" and maintain the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific, while voicing concern about Chinese activities in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.

He also hailed as "a cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence" a new 10-year defence cooperation framework signed with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

"It's a significant step for our two militaries, a roadmap for deeper and even more meaningful collaboration ahead," Hegseth told reporters after the signing.

Hegseth and Singh met for the first time since the United States imposed tariffs of 50% on Indian goods in August as punishment for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, which led to India pausing purchases of U.S. defence equipment.

TRUMP CALL TO RESUME NUCLEAR WEAPONS TESTING

Hegseth's visit to Southeast Asia came soon after Trump shocked the world by announcing on social media that he had asked the U.S. military to "start testing our Nuclear Weapons", saying the United States could not fall behind Russia and China.But there has been confusion in Washington as to whether Trump meant testing nuclear weapons delivery systems such as missiles, or explosive testing of nuclear devices, which would mean ending a 33-year moratorium.

Hegseth did not respond when asked by a reporter on Friday to clarify what kind of nuclear tests Trump was referring to.

ASEAN is consistently opposed to nuclear weapons and working to get all nuclear weapons states to endorse a nuclear-free zone in Southeast Asia, Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn told reporters on Friday, when asked about the resumption.

The U.S. has sought to shore up its presence in Southeast Asia to counter an increasingly assertive China, with Trump on Sunday telling ASEAN leaders Washington is "with you 100% and we intend to be a strong partner for many generations".

The United States has a defence pact with the Philippines that involves dozens of annual military drills and use of some of its bases, in addition to similar exercises with Thailand and Indonesia and security exchanges with Malaysia.

'REESTABLISH DETERRENCE IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA'

In a succession of X posts carrying images of his Kuala Lumpur meetings on Friday, Hegseth said he discussed a longstanding alliance with Thailand's defence minister, described Indonesia as "an anchor of regional stability" and said he discussed advancing Washington's strong defence partnership with the Philippines.

"We will work relentlessly to reestablish deterrence in the South China Sea and advance our alliance," he said of the meeting with the Philippine defence secretary Gilberto Teodoro.

Beijing claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea via a line on its maps that overlaps with parts of the exclusive economic zones of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

China has deployed a coast guard armada to enforce those claims, has clashed repeatedly with Philippine vessels and has been accused of disrupting the energy activities of Malaysia and Vietnam.

Beijing says its coast guard has operated professionally in defending Chinese territory from incursions.

Chinese Defence Minister Dong told ASEAN counterparts that Beijing would work with its neighbours to "make the shield of common security even more solid".

"With Eastern wisdom, we shall pool Eastern strength, and through practical actions, safeguard lasting peace and stability in the South China Sea," he said, according to China's defence ministry.

সিলেটে নিজ বাসার ছাদে আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা খুন

 

সিলেটে নিজ বাসা থেকে আব্দুর রাজ্জাক নামে এক আওয়ামী লীগ নেতার মরদেহ উদ্ধার করা হয়েছে। স্বজনরা বিষয়টিকে আত্মহত্যা হিসেবে উল্লেখ করলেও তার শরীরে আঘাতের চিহ্ন রয়েছে। পুলিশ জানিয়েছে, ওই ব্যক্তির নাড়িভুঁড়ি বেরিয়ে গেছে। এটিকে হত্যাকাণ্ড হিসেবেই তদন্ত করছেন তারা। 

শুক্রবার সকালে দক্ষিণ সুরমা তেলিরাই গ্রামের বাসা থেকে তার লাশ উদ্ধার হয়। আগের রাতে গাজীপুরে এক যুবককে কুপিয়ে হত্যা করেছে দুর্বৃত্তরা। এ ছাড়া নারায়ণগঞ্জের সোনারগাঁয়ে দুই যুবকের লাশ উদ্ধার হয়েছে। 

ফজরের পর ছাদে গিয়ে খুন
সিলেটে নিহত আব্দুর রাজ্জাক দক্ষিণ সুরমা উপজেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সহসভাপতি ও দক্ষিণ সুরমা উপজেলা ক্রীড়া সংস্থার সাবেক সাধারণ সম্পাদক। তিনি দক্ষিণ সুরমার মোল্লারগাঁও ইউনিয়নের তেলিরাই গ্রামের প্রয়াত মৌলুল হোসেনের ছেলে। 

পরিবারের বরাত দিয়ে পুলিশ জানায়, ফজরের নামাজ পড়ে বাসার ছাদে হাঁটতে যান আবদুর রাজ্জাক। সকাল ৯টার দিকে তাকে বাসায় না পেয়ে ছাদে গিয়ে পরিবারের সদস্যরা তার রক্তাক্ত লাশ দেখতে পায়। কিন্তু এই বক্তব্য মানতে নারাজ পুলিশ। দক্ষিণ সুরমা থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা (ওসি) মিজানুর রহমানের ধারণা, আব্দুর রাজ্জাককে খুন করা হয়েছে। আত্মহত্যা করলে নাড়িভুঁড়ি বের হবে কেন। তার শরীরে ছুরিকাঘাতের চিহ্নও রয়েছে। লাশ ময়নাতদন্তের জন্য ওসমানী মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতাল মর্গে পাঠানো হয়েছে।

পুলিশ পারিবারিক বিরোধসহ সম্পত্তি নিয়ে বিরোধের বিষয় সামনে রেখে তদন্ত করছে। শুক্রবার সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত এ নিয়ে থানায় কোনো অভিযোগ দেওয়া হয়নি। মহানগর পুলিশের অতিরিক্ত উপকমিশনার (গণমাধ্যম) মোহাম্মদ সাইফুল ইসলাম বলেন, হত্যাকাণ্ডের রহস্য উদঘাটনে পুলিশ কাজ করছে। পরিবারের কেউ বাদী না হলে পুলিশ বাদী হয়ে মামলা করবে। 

সমস্যা সমাধান করেন, যাতে নির্বাচনের দিকে যেতে পারি

বিএনপি মহাসচিব মির্জা ফখরুল ইসলাম আলমগীর বলেছেন, আজকে দেশে যে সংকট তৈরি করেছে এই অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকার ও ঐকমত্য কমিশন, আমি বিশ্বাস করি এই সংকট কেটে যাবে। যা হবার হয়ে গেছে; আপনারা দয়া করে ওই সমস্যাগুলো সমাধান করেন, যাতে সবাই একসঙ্গে নির্বাচনের দিকে যেতে পারি। এই সমস্যার সমাধান করে আমরা যেন জনগণের কল্যাণের জন্য কাজ করতে পারি, সেই পথে এগিয়ে চলুন।

তিনি বলেন, আমরা অতীতে আপনাদের সঙ্গে ছিলাম, ভবিষ্যতেও আপনাদের সঙ্গে থাকবো। কিন্তু অবশ্যই আপনারা যে জায়গা তৈরি করেছেন, তা পরিষ্কার করে দেবেন।

শুক্রবার ইঞ্জিনিয়ার্স ইনস্টিটিউশন মিলনায়তনে গণসংহতি আন্দোলনের ৫ম জাতীয় সম্মেলনে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।

মির্জা ফখরুল বলেন, আজ এখানে অনেকে হতাশা প্রকাশ করেছেন। আমি আমার ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে কোনোদিন হতাশাবাদী ছিলাম না, রাজনৈতিক জীবনেও হতাশাবাদী নই। কারণ আমি বিশ্বাস করি যে, ন্যায়ের জয় হবেই, সত্যের জয় হবেই। এ সময় গণসংহতি আন্দোলনের জাতীয় সম্মেলনে বিএনপি মহাসচিব সবার প্রতি ঐক্যের আহ্বান জানান। জোনায়েদ সাকির নেতৃত্ব গণসংহতি আন্দোলনের উত্তরোত্তর সাফল্য কামনা করেন বিএনপি মহাসচিব।

সম্মেলনে এ সময় উপস্থিত ছিলেন নাগরিক ঐক্যের সভাপতি মাহমুদুর রহমান মান্না, বিপ্লবী ওয়ার্কার্স পার্টির সাধারণ সম্পাদক সাইফুল হক, বাংলাদেশ রাষ্ট্র সংস্কার আন্দোলনের সাধারণ সম্পাদক সৈয়দ হাসিবউদ্দীন হোসেন, ভাসানী জনশক্তি পার্টির চেয়ারম্যান শেখ রফিকুল ইসলাম বাবলু, আমার বাংলাদেশ (এবি) পার্টির চেয়ারম্যান মজিবুর রহমান মঞ্জু, গণঅধিকার পরিষদের সভাপতি নুরুল হক নুর, জাতীয় নাগরিক পার্টির (এনসিপি) জ্যেষ্ঠ যুগ্ম আহ্বায়ক আরিফুল ইসলাম আদীব প্রমুখ।

সম্মেলনে উপস্থিত বক্তারা জাতীয় ঐকমত্য কমিশনকে উদ্দেশ্য করে বলেন, বুদ্ধিমান ব্যক্তিরা যখন নির্বুদ্ধিতার পরিচয় দেয় তখন দুঃখ করার কী থাকে। যাদের আমরা মাথায় তুলে রেখেছি, তাদের এখন প্রতারক আখ্যা দিতে হচ্ছে, এর চেয়ে দুঃখ আর লজ্জা আর কী থাকে। তারা জাতীয় ঐক্যের অনৈক্য তৈরি করেছে। তারা বিশ্বাস ভঙ্গ করেছে। তবে সবকিছু শেষ হয়ে যায়নি। জাতীয় নির্বাচনের দিন গণভোট অনুষ্ঠিত হলে সমস্যার সমাধান হতে পারে। এখন বাংলাদেশ আবার সংকট মুহূর্তে খাদের কিনারায় দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। জুলাই আন্দোলনের মতো সবাইকে আবার একত্রে থাকতে হবে।

সভাপতির বক্তব্যে গণসংহতি আন্দোলনের প্রধান সমন্বয়কারী জুনায়েদ সাকী বলেন, মধ্য ফেব্রুয়ারির মধ্যে যে নির্বাচনের পথরেখা সেটা সফল করতে হবে। মনে রাখতে হবে বিচার, সংস্কার, নির্বাচন এই মুহূর্তে বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় দাবি। 

জামায়াতের সেক্রেটারি জেনারেলের ফেব্রুয়ারিতে নির্বাচন পেছাতে পারে এই বক্তব্যের সমালোচনা করে সাকী বলেন, এমন কোনো অবস্থার সৃষ্টি করবেন না, যাতে দেশে একটি অস্থিতিশীল পরিবেশ তৈরি হয়। মধ্য ফেব্রুয়ারির মধ্যে নির্বাচন হতেই হবে। জনগণের ভোটের অধিকার বাস্তবায়ন করা এই অন্তবর্তীকালীন সরকারের দায়িত্ব। এটি এই সরকারকে বাস্তবায়ন করতে হবে।

এর আগে গণসংহতি আন্দোলনের জাতীয় সম্মেলনের শুরুতে পায়রা উড়িয়ে জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থানে শহীদ নাজমুল কাজীর স্ত্রী মারিয়া সুলতানা এবং শহীদ ওমর নুরুল আবছারের স্ত্রী ফারজানা জাহান অনুষ্ঠানের সূচনা করেন। 

অনুষ্ঠানে জাতীয় সংগীত পরিবেশনের পাশাপাশি জাতীয় পতাকা উত্তোলন করেন গণসংহতি আন্দোলনের প্রধান সমন্বয়কারী জোনায়েদ সাকি, দলীয় পতাকা উত্তোলন করেন দলের নির্বাহী সমন্বয়কারী আবুল হাসান রুবেল। উদ্বোধন অনুষ্ঠানের শুরুতেই জুলাই শহীদদের প্রতি সম্মান জানিয়ে এক মিনিট নীরবতা পালন করা হয়।

Canada's Carney agrees to visit China after meeting Xi

GYEONGJU, South Korea/BEIJING, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to visit China after meeting with President Xi Jinping on Friday, in an encounter that may have marked a turning point but offered no breakthroughs on trade.

Xi and Carney met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Gyeongju, South Korea, which was part of Carney's tour of Asia aimed at deepening trade and security ties in the region as Canada strives to reduce its dependence on the U.S.

The last formal meeting between the leaders of Canada and China happened in 2017 when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a brief exchange with Xi at a meeting in San Francisco.

Canada remains embroiled in a trade dispute with the United States, its biggest trading partner.

China is Canada's second-biggest trading partner, but recent disputes have complicated relations.

"The meeting signals a change in tone and an openness to relations at the highest levels, but this is not a return to strategic partnership," said Vina Nadjibulla, vice president of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. "Canada needs to proceed with caution because there's nothing to suggest the Chinese Communist Party's actions have changed since the prime minister named China as a foreign security threat."

She said Carney should keep talking with Chinese leaders but stay mindful of China's threats to Canada's security interests, including its efforts to play a greater role in Arctic affairs.

Carney has previously stressed the need to restart broad engagement with China after years of worsening ties.

In recent years, Canadian citizens were detained and executed in China, and Canada's security authorities concluded that China interfered in at least two federal elections.

Carney and Xi discussed trade issues including agriculture and agri-food products, such as canola, as well as seafood and electric vehicles, Carney's office said.

"Prime Minister Carney accepted President Xi's invitation to visit China at a mutually convenient time," it said in a statement.

China announced preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports in August, a year after Canada said it would levy a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles.

XI SAYS CHINA IS WILLING TO WORK WITH CANADA

Xi told Carney that China values Canada's stated readiness to improve bilateral relations, according to state broadcaster CCTV, adding that China was willing to work with Canada to put ties back on track.

Earlier on Friday, Carney told a business event that the world of rules-based liberalised trade and investment had passed, adding that Canada aimed to double its non-U.S. exports over the next decade.

Nadjibulla said China should not be viewed as the solution to Canada's issues with the U.S., however.

"We should not diversify away from the U.S. and go deeper into China," she said. "Canada's overdependence on both the U.S. and China has been shown to be a vulnerability we cannot afford."

Stocks higher after latest earnings, dollar climbs after Fed comments

 

NEW YORK, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Global stocks were poised for their third straight week of gains and seventh consecutive monthly advance on Friday as earnings from megacaps Amazon and Apple eased concerns about lofty valuations, while the dollar climbed after comments from some Federal Reserve officials.

Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab surged more than 10% after reporting cloud revenue rose at the fastest clip in nearly three years, helping the company forecast quarterly sales above estimates.

Apple shares, however, eased 0.3% to $270.52 after reaching an intraday record of $277.32 after it reported quarterly earnings and forecast holiday quarter iPhone sales and overall revenue that surpass Wall Street expectations thanks to strong demand for its iPhone 17 models.

The results cap off a run of earnings this week from several megacap companies, included in the so-called "Magnificent Seven" group of stocks, that made clear the massive build of infrastructure surrounding artificial intelligence shows no signs of abating.

"It was a doozy of a week of earnings, to say the least, so I think that the big takeaways are that the AI narrative is alive and well, there's strong demand for cloud computing and not enough capacity," said Jake Seltz, portfolio manager for the Empiric LT Equity team at Allspring in Minneapolis.

"We've seen this for multiple quarters now in a row, just looking at the capital spending they're committing to invest in, building out some of that cloud capacity for AI data centers across the board, we've seen it just go up."

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average <.DJI> rose 75.26 points, or 0.16%, to 47,597.38; the S&P 500 <.SPX> rose 38.30 points, or 0.56%, to 6,860.64; and the Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> rose 254.26 points, or 1.08%, to 23,835.40.

Each of the three indexes was on track for a third straight weekly gain, while the Nasdaq was set for its seventh straight monthly climb, its longest streak since January 2018.

MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe (.MIWD00000PUS), opens new tab rose 2.56 points, or 0.25%, to 1,007.74, on track for a seventh straight monthly climb, its longest run since August 2021.

The pan-European STOXX 600 (.STOXX), opens new tab index 0.53% after a round of mixed quarterly earnings and a benign euro zone inflation report that reinforced the European Central Bank's view that price pressures remain contained.

This week has also seen the Bank of Japan hold interest rates steady despite many economists predicting a hike.

In currencies, the dollar strengthened after comments from some Fed officials that further dampened expectations the central bank will cut interest rates at its December meeting following comments from Chair Jerome Powell in the wake of its policy announcement that cast doubt on another cut this year.

Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid said he dissented against cutting interest rates this week out of concern that continued high inflation and signs of price pressures spreading in the economy could raise doubts about the central bank's commitment to its 2% inflation target.

In addition, Dallas Federal Reserve President Lorie Logan said the Fed should not have cut interest rates this week and should not do so again in December.

The dollar index , which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose 0.3% to 99.77, with the euro down 0.29% at $1.1531. The greenback was on pace for a second straight weekly gain and a monthly climb of 0.8%.

The Japanese yen strengthened 0.08% against the greenback to 153.98 per dollar. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said the government has been monitoring foreign exchange movements with a high sense of urgency after the yen plunged to around 154 per U.S. dollar.

Economic data showed core inflation in Japan's capital accelerated in October and stayed above the central bank's 2% target, keeping market expectations for a rate hike from the Bank of Japan (BOJ) intact.

The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes fell 1.2 basis points to 4.081% while the 2-year note yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations for the Federal Reserve, fell 2 basis points to 3.594%.

U.S. crude rose 0.28% to $60.74 a barrel and Brent rose to $65.05 per barrel, up 0.08% on the day.
